Jana Thomoson is currently a doctoral student in the DDes program at North Carolina State University. She has worked in artificial intelligence for almost a decade, in addition to past work in language archiving and dying languages.
Her doctoral research is focusing on sense-making and local environmental knowledge in the region of the Salish Sea on the West Coast of North America. She also is an affiliate researcher at the Machine Learning for Language at NYU where she helps develop benchmarking data sets for large language models. Additionally, Jana holds masters degrees in UX Design and Germanic Studies and undergraduate degrees in anthropology and mathematics.
